I don’t have any numbers to substantiate this, but I would suspect that the #1 home improvement project this holiday weekend is painting your house. Most home owners feel this is a project they can tackle, and the cost is certainly right. A quality gallon of paint can handle a normal 12 by 15 room, if 2 coats aren’t necessary.
To substantiate my claim, I ran into Dayna Leigh from State Farm at Starbucks Friday morning. She was taking the day off, and told me she was painting her condo over the holiday. Then she flattered me and said that the color scheme in my office inspired her, and she was going to do something similar. She’s doing the only home improvement project I heard about on Friday, so from my research, 100% of home improvement projects are indeed painting projects. 8- )
More importantly, painting your home can add serious value and appeal, if/when you ever decide to sell. Sellers will often say they don’t want to paint their home (leaving it the original builder white), because they don’t want the color to turn off potential buyers. But the reality is that the plain look isn’t WOWing buyers, and thus they are forgetting the home.
I recently sold a home with bright red walls in the living and dining room, a sage green kitchen, and then subtle beige walls in the bedrooms. There was just enough drama with the color to create appeal, and neutrality with the beige not to drive away buyers. This home was an excellent example of how color helped get that seller a higher price, and sell their home quicker.
So, if you spent (or are spending) your holiday weekend adding a little pizazz to your home with some paint, congratulations! And if you aren’t painting, but instead looking at those plain white walls, there’s still plenty of time to find a paint brush.
