Michael Clancy at The Arizona Repbulic reports that “Phoenix planners have seen the future, and it looks a lot like Desert Ridge,” in this article.
Around the Valley, areas with high density housing are unusual, particularly those with a true mixed-purpose lifestyle. But to think that as many as 10,000 dense housing units (apartments and condos) will be in place in the Desert Ridge area is brow raising.
For me, Desert Ridge is one of many examples of progressive urban development by Phoenix. And it shows how much Scottsdale needs to improve their urban development. Nearby Kierland Commons is another glaring example.
Both developments are situated very close to Scottsdale’s borders. Poised, as if taunting Scottsdale with missed opportunity.
Scottsdale has been slow to catch up, but they do have a few smaller projects in the works. The latest is Scottsdale Quarter. This project will be “across the street” from Keirland on the southeast corner of Greenway-Hayden Loop and Scottsdale Road. Construction is just under way.
Scottsdale Quarter joins the more heavily publicized One Scottsdale as mixed-use projects in North Scottsdale. I can only hope that more of these types of projects get approved, and I applaud Phoenix for showing the rest of the Valley how it’s done.
