The tacky flags covering the big tent in Westworld are actively coming down. I snapped this photo of the progress today. Looking at the photo, you’ll notice a section that’s missing near the top of the second section from the right. That section has been missing for months. The original covering simply didn’t measure up to the demands of the Arizona sun, which apparently was expected, since it was used.
The new covering is Italian made and said to have a sandstone exterior color and a blackout interior color, which will make it better suited to media events. It’s being supplied by a Canadian company and is supposed to last 10 years. The cost of the re-covering project is reported to be $1.4M.
The city of Scottsdale originally paid $2M for the tent, and another $2M to have it erected, primarily as a lure for the annual Barrett-Jackson auction. Reports indicate that Barrett-Jackson is still unhappy with the tent, and wants Scottsdale to build an $80M auction house or sell Barrett-Jackson another 8 acres of Westworld land so they can build their own. I can only hope that the city does whatever it takes to make Barrett-Jackson happy. This is a marque event, like the Arabian Horse show and the Phoenix Open, that needs to stay right where it’s at.
