Where did I leave that comment?

December 28, 2007 · 2 comments

If you are like me, you may find yourself clicking around, through, over, and under the blogoverse, just going whereever the next link takes you, and then 20 degrees removed from where you started, you stumble upon something that you fell compelled to comment on.  So you comment.  Every author loves comments.  We should all commit to leaving more comments in 2008 that we did in 2007.  And then a few days go by, and you think, where did I leave that comment?  What blog was it?  What post on that blog was it?  Did I actually submit the comment, or get interrupted and never submit it?

What makes a blog better than a plain jane website, the newspaper, a newsletter, or nearly any other form of opinion/news source, is the ability to leave a comment and begin a discussion.  Of course, for a discussion, you must return to scene of the comment, and read the responses, and post more comments.  So, for 2008, I’m making 2 pledges (actually, I’ll probably make more pledges, but here’s 2 of them):

  1. Comment more.  I read a lot of great posts on blogs, but all too often skip right along to the next thing.  In 2008, I’ll focus on commenting when I find something interesting.
  2. Subscribe to comments when I do comment more.

PS- If you noticed a subtle hint to leave more comments on this blog…that was purely a side effect.

For the truly geeky reader in you a side effect is actually a technical software developer term, referring to an unintended but actual impact of the functionality. If this post causes more comments on this blog…that was not really the intent, but it would be a welcome side effect.
