Top 10 things to do while visiting Phoenix for Super Bowl Week

Super Bowl 42It’s Friday.  Teresa Boardman in St. Paul writes Fridays are for fun, and I’m finally listening.  At least this week.  And probably next week, but after that, I can’t make any promises.  By this point, if you are planning to come to Phoenix for the Super Bowl, you’ve probably at least got travel plans.  Some place to stay, some way to get there, and hopefully a legitimate connection for a ticket to the game.  Of course, many people come to the city of the Super Bowl, during Super Bowl week, with no plan to actually attend the game.  They just want to experience all of the hoop-la.  And that’s cool.  This post is for anyone planning to be in Phoenix for Super Bowl week.

Now, the game itself will only be 3+ hours long, so if you are here for a week (or so) what will you do with all of that free time?  Hopefully it’s reading this blog every day, but after that 10 minutes is up, here are a few more ideas.  It’s my top 10 list of things to do, while visiting Phoenix, for Super Bowl week:

10.
Visit GoDaddy.com HQ.  If there’s one company who’s Super Bowl ads have more hype and controversy, I don’t know who they are.  GoDaddy.com is based on Scottsdale, Arizona, and while I highly doubt that a visit to their corporate office could possibly be viewed as sexy, it’s probably more fun that visiting Google on the Arizona State University’s campus in Tempe.
 9.
The NFL Experience will be open this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and then again from Thursday through Super Bowl Sunday.  My office manager, Shannon, will be volunteering there on Saturday (2/2), so if you run in to her, be sure to give her a hard time.
 8. If you are coming to Phoenix a little hungry, you’re probably hoping to take in some good Mexican Food.  PF Changes, Fleming’s Steakhouse, Morton’s Steakhouse, and Maggiano’s are all great places to eat, but you didn’t come here with those places in mind.  My personal favorite is Carlos O’Briens.  The owner happens to live in my neighborhood, but that’s not why I like it.  It’s their machaca beef chimichangas, that I love.  Other notables include Aunt Chiladas and for those who want it super spicey, there’s Los Dos Molinos.
 7. Go to a Super Bowl Party.  There are a ton of choices in Super Bowl parties, so I’ll just name a few of the biggies.  There’s the Maxim Party, Playboy Party, Sports Illustrated Party, and the Commissioners Ball.  All of these parties are either on February 1st or 2nd.
 6.
With the excellent weather in Phoenix, there’s no better place to rent a Harley Davidson for the day.   Hacienca Harley Davidson in Scottsdale rents many different Harley’s for the day out of their huge showroom, so long as you have a valid motorcycle endorsement.  For a casual ride, you can cruise on down to Florence, up to Payson, or over to Wickenburg.  The annual Florence Prison Run which is organized by the Hell’s Angels is February 10th, for those staying the week after the big game.
 5. After you take in #2, you’ll probably want to head on over the Bird’s Nest for your post-golf party.  A bigger, better party location is hard to find anywhere, anytime.
 4. Hit the links.  Phoenix is widely known for its abundance of quality golf courses.  During the day - if you can get up before 2pm - what could be a better way to spend your day.  My personal favorite golf course is Legend Trail in North Scottsdale, but you can’t look past Troon North or The Boulders.  On the west side of Phoenix, The Legend at Arrowhead is more affordable and The 500 Club offers a Stock Car theme to their facility.
 3.
You’re here for the Super Bowl, so you are a sports fan.  You might as well take the opportunity to see one of the best NBA teams play.  The Phoenix Suns are home against Atlanta on 1/29 and for the biggest home game of the year, they take on San Antonio on 1/31.  Tickets for the Spurs game are going to be expensive and difficult to get…but you have experience with that already, so this should actually be easy.  FYI, the Phoenix Coyotes are on a road trip.  I know that dissappoints the NFL fan from Winnipeg, but maybe next time.
 2. Go to the FBR Open.  The FBR Open draws more fans than any other golf event of the year.  On Saturday they estimate 125,000 fans watch the golf live at the TPC of Scottsdale.  On Super Bowl Sunday, the organizers of the FBR Open have allowed time for fans to watch the Open to its conclusion and still make it to the game on time.  Personally, it means I can watch the golf, and then get home in time to watch the game on TV.  Honestly, the FBR Open is my favorite event of the year.
 1.
If none of the above activities have you spending quite enough money while you are here (it’s estimated the Super Bowl will bring an additional $400 million into the Phoenix economy), you might want to consider buying a house or condo.  You might not be aware that housing prices have fallen a little in the last 2 years, creating a tremendous buying opportunity in the Phoenix housing market.  If you’d like to take a look at a couple of amazing deals, give me a ring, and I’ll be glad to help you.

Please enjoy your time in Phoenix, and leave a comment if you do any of the above, or even something different.  I’d love to know how people spend their extra time here in Phoenix enjoying the festivities.

Hey! How about Glendale Glitters in the winter and the Salt River in the summer? I always love doing stuff like that. It’s so relaxing, but make sure to bring a ton of sun block.
