I have a Sears Kenmore that I had installed in April 2001. Today I noticed what looked like Metamucil in the commode tanks. I bypassed my water softener, checked that the water heater was okay, that I had water coming to the house, etc. and then turned on the shower in one bath and the tub in the other and let them run. The commodes, tub and shower cleared up but my bath room sinks and kitchen sink almost have no pressure so I'm going to turn on the water and let them run. My Kinmore worked over 7 years so I think I'll just buy a new water softener but not a Kinmore this time. I've heard enough horror stories!

Hi Diana-

I'm not aware of a water pressure problem with this house. That doesn't mean there isn't one, but none of the plumbers that have visited the home (4 the last 6 months), have noticed a water pressure issue.

Did this house with the water softener failure causing the resin to go through the house pipes by any chance have water pressure regulator problems? I live in a high pressure area that requires changing of my water pressure regulator every 2 years or so. I had heard that too much pressure could cause your water softener to do this. First hand experience myself, that's how I just found out. Similar problem with the resin but it decided to go all over my garage instead and my water pressure in my house dropped dramatically but not completely. Of course, it was also a Sears Kenmore.

Steve,

It would be interesting to learn if this is a situation covered by most (or any) home warranty policies. I'm going to ask!

Thanks for sharing this info.

This home had a water softener, so I immediately assumed there was some type of blockage in the softener. I advised him to attempt to bypass the softener, which he did. That didn’t change anything. Lack of water is an emergency situation, even more so than lack of AC, so I called up my after hours plumber (it was 6pm), and headed over myself to meet the plumber and see what the problems was.
