First day of school for Scottsdale schools

School-startsSchool is in session right now for children in the Scottsdale school district (which happens to include my two girls). If you are reading this from outside Arizona you may be surprised that school starts so early here in the Valley of the Sun.  Most of the districts in the Phoenix area have a strong desire to finish the fall semester before the winter break (aka Christmas). Add to that a week long fall break (spring break in October), and basic calendar math starts school in early August.

Many other districts started lasted week (Tempe, Kyrene, Gilbert, Cave Creek), while Mesa, Paradise Valley Union and Deer Valley Unified also started today.

It’s warm outside in Scottsdale in the month of August, which requires some changes to the recess policies for the younger kids. Above 100 degrees outside and they use the rainy day schedule, avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure.

Often, families moving to the Phoenix area during the summer are surprised that they’ve missed the first week or two or three of school, figuring school to start around Labor Day.  Hopefully you aren’t one of those surprised families.
