Mortgage Related Tip of The Week: Finding a Great Loan Officer

This week is going to be our final installment of the “How To Find The Right Loan Officer” series.  Over the past 4 weeks, I have talked about 4 different things that you can do to help you find the best loan officer for your situation.

Tip #4: Use The Internet To Learn More About Your Loan Officer.

G-o-o-g-l-e.

It is an amazing tool that is available for everyone to use to learn more about what kind of professional they are dealing with.  Sure, there are other tools such as Yahoo, MSN and maybe 1,000 others — but Google seems to be the easiest, most comprehensive search tool that can quickly give you an idea of the caliber of the loan officer.

Most, if not all of the best loan officers that I have met, have a significant online presence that goes beyond the simple brochure-type website.

Good loan officers are usually members of various industry associations,  (for example, the Arizona Mortgage Lenders Association or the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association or the Arizona Mortgage Brokers Association, etc.) have a profile in at least one social-media type of site such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and more and more loan officers are also starting to blog.

When you go to Google and search on a particular loan officer, you can pretty easily get a good idea of how “well connected” your loan officer is.

Let’s try this out in a real-life example.  Google “Gary Miljour”.  He is a great local loan officer here in Tempe and does an excellent job of managing his online profile.  Way to go Gary!

Over the last few weeks, I have shared 4 things that you can do to help you find the right loan officer.  Here they are one more time:

  1. Ask for a referral from a Realtor that you personally know and like.
  2. Ask the first loan officer that you speak with to refer you to the best 2 loan officers they know.
  3. Ask the loan officer if you can speak with one of his clients currently using his services.
  4. Use the Internet to learn more about your loan officer.

Remember, the loan officer makes all of the difference in how easy and smooth your home financing process goes.  It is worth the time investment on your part to choose wisely so that you end up with the right financing with the least amount of hassle!

There is one tip listed above that I think often gets overlooked - finding a good loan officer. This can make or break your home buying experience. Do some research and look for a loan officer that can do the best work for you.
